Welcome back! Happy Easter! I'm so happy to see you here with me! Today's a great day in the faith, so I want to open up today's post with something I read recently in John on Monday. In 16:33 ESV, it is written, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” And that He did. Life has really been kicking me around as of late and I had to realize that all my problems are temporary because it's already been completed for me, and that I need to focus on one day at a time with Him. I hope that encourages you too, and keeps you in the spirit of today's holiday! This is more of a laid back post than it is a deep one. Last week Sunday we left off speaking about convictions and I shared how music was one of mine. So today I wanted to talk about what "secular" music is and share a few songs/artists I've been listening to on repeat to put someone on y'know?
So what is secular music exactly? Well first we have to understand what secular means (and it's actually quite simple really). It's just anything that has no connection to God or any religion. So secular music means any music that holds no connection to God. Now this might ruffle some of the old head Christian feathers but not all secular music is bad. This is definitely a shared sentiment among many Christians and I understand this may be a personal conviction for some and again, as we said last week, that's between you and your relationship with God. But for me that doesn't quite stick. My spirit isn't offended because I hear a 2 year old listening to Coco melon- a secular song. I don't mean to offend but let's be forreal a little bit.
The way I see it, God created us in His image with beautiful emotions and we are given authority to express them. Yes, we must do all things that glorify God, but I hold the belief that innocently delighting in the joys of His creation is glorifying Him! So it does make me sad to see some Christians badger those who still have some secular songs in their rotation. But it definitely takes a level of discernment because I'm all about guarding my heart and my mind nowadays.
So switching to music, I can't lie and say I didn't think Western Christian music had a corny rep for the longest time...and it's true babes! The quality was kinda meh. I've been on the hunt for something good from all genres, specifically from R&B, afrobeats, rap and the like. So here's what I came across so far!
Caleb Gordon
Definitely top 2 and he hasn't been number two for me lately! I really like what he's been putting out within the last 3 ish years and here are some of my favorite songs by him.
1) Quick- a high paced song that really goes in. Great for the gym cause of the horns fr.
2) Rewrite History- for a "breaking generational curses" kind of vibe. "The first to graduate in the family, first to get married, first of many's" type of vibe.
3) Rocky Road pt 2 ft Alano Adan- Just a low energy head banger.
4) Love Till it Hurts- When you're feeling backed into a corner and the world is against you, this is the song to put on.
5) Pop Out with Christ-
Alano Adan
I found this artist off of the Rocky Road pt 2 feature. Though he hasn't put out much music since his last album, If Not Now, Then When? back in 2021, I think he has a promising sound for me.
1) Leap of Faith- Kind of gives me Drake a tad bit? Just a little.
2) Beat the Odds- The last part? Love, Love, Love it! Very uplifiting, high gospel church energy.
3) Hold Your Peace- The intro makes me feel it's title literally. I feel as though I'm being fed these words...just for the rest of the song to hit. Then the ending just instills that hope of knowing who you are in Christ. How wonderfully and fearfully made we are, and how none of this stuff we work ourselves up with really matters fr. Like it does, but we won't take it to the grave.

Uninvited, Saint
Strawberry Worship: This song is so smooth and intimate that I feel baby Christians and even all people who have an akin to getting to know this faith can find some love and hope in. Super excited to broaden my R&B playlist with other songs like this.
Hulvey
COMA: I really appreciate this project because this was the first album I started getting into when I first started my walk again. Now I can't say every song was my absolute favorite but here were the three that I liked:
Can't Tell it All (Remix): I actually like the remix and the original, almost equally might I add. Here's the original song and I'll attach the remix too.
Let Go of Me ft Caleb Gordon
Crack the Tomb- This instrumental kind of reminds me of something Kanye made at one point...and I can't put my finger on it but yeahhh.
Afrobeats
My Gospel Afrobeats playlist is shameful at this moment and I'm still looking for some good things to add! But so far these three songs have caught my eye and they're in my rotation too!
Annatoria- Stay With Me: Definitely Afropop rather than our typical afrobeats song.
Limoblaze ft Emending- Desire: This is if you need some amapiano in your set.
Rehmahz, CalledOut Music- Salvation: This reminds me of a song that our aunties would be singing while cutting okra at the sink.
Rehmahz, Oba Reengy- Follow: This song is sweet! That's all! I actually find myself liking of Rehmahz's music and I can't wait to check out the rest of his discography.
Laura Ehio - Pompous (Sped up version): TikTok definitely put me on to this song and unfortunately the sped up version eats down. But fortunately Laura has this official version on all platforms!
And that's about all my recommendations I'd like to share! Eventually when my playlist gets a little more rounded out, I'll likely update this post and link my playlist on Spotify. But for now, thanks for tuning in and I can't wait to see you next week!
